These images were printed for a series of folio books published by Hugh Evelyn 50 years ago. The Naval silhouettes were created by John Mollo. The author and artist, Colonel P.H. Smitherman, painted and described the military uniforms in his books and endeavoured to explain the evolution of the regiments portrayed up to the time when he wrote. But time has overtaken the 1960's evolutions. British imperial power faded within a few years of WW II. By the early 1960's, when these military prints were created, British regiments had already begun to amalgamate or disband as Britain's role (and wealth) diminished. This process has accelerated to the present day. Nearly every regiment, bar one or two of the most senior, has amalgamated, often repeatedly. We attempt to show where each regiment has gone. Where we have been unable to do so or have given wrong information please let us know.
